When Living in the Moment Goes Wrong, Sports Edition

Payton Manning - OpinionatedMale.comYo! Yo! Yo!  fellow readers of OM, I hope your new year is going well so far. I’m not into New years Resolutions or anything but if you made some, I hope you are sticking to, or attempting to stick to them. I guess one we all have is to save more and spend less but it’s rather daunting to do so. Anyway let’s touch on some of the stuff we’ve seen in sports over the last few weeks.

I want to congratulate Peyton Manning on his victory against the Patriots this past Sunday. I mean after all you beat a Patriots team that was already void of receivers (we’ll get to that in a bit) & had very little on the defensive side. Vince Wilfork, Tommy Kelly, Brandon Spikes, and Jerrod Mayo all were out with injuries. Peyton had a hell of a game as he surgically picked apart the patriots corpse of a defense.

People have loads of conspiracy theories on the game. I’ve heard everything ranging from it was Peyton’s year to win to Nobody wants to see the Patriots in the Superbowl because of their lack of popularity. I’ll say this, conspiracy theories aside Denver was the better team period. And yes Peyton was a kid in a candy shop or an old man with Viagra in the Playboy Mansion as far as receivers go. It’s not his fault he had better options than Brady.

I do blame the Patriots for not re-signing some players back and shoring up their secondary. On the other hand no one could see all-pro Tight End Rob Gronkowski out again with a season ending injury or Aaron Hernandez going to the ‘pen. That I understand but the fact they let Wes Welker and Danny Woodhead walk for next to nothing was preposterous. If Belichick wanted to get into a d*ck measuring contest with Welker over money than I guess we could say he came out with the smaller johnson.

They started the 2012 season with Aaron Hernandez, Brandon Lloyd, Rob Gronkowski, Danny Woodhead, and Wes Welker as Brady’s prime receivers and none of them returned to play in 2013 (Gronkowski missed 9  games this year). Here are some numbers to chew on:

2012 stats

Gronkowski: 55 catches, 790 yards, 11 touchdowns
Lloyd: 74 catches, 911 yards, 4 touchdowns
Welker: 118 catches, 1,354 yards, 6 touchdowns
Hernandez: 84 catches, 483 yards, 5 touchdowns
Woodhead: 55 catches, 446 yards, 3 touchdowns

Folks that’s a lot of production to lose. I hope they can get it together and get their team ready to win another ring because Brady at 37 years old doesn’t have a lot left in the tank.

Kellen-Winslow - OpinionatedMale.comKellen Winslow the mercurial and talented wide receiver for the New York Jets was caught in a err…jam so to speak.
Below excerpt courtesy of ESPN.com

“Embarrassing details have emerged about the recent arrest of New York Jets tight end Kellen Winslow, who was charged last month with possession of synthetic marijuana. Police approached Winslow, who was parked in his car outside a Target store in East Hanover, N.J., because they were summoned by a woman who complained that he was masturbating in the vehicle, according to police and court records obtained by ESPN.com.

The woman, whose name was redacted from the report, provided a written statement of her account. She was shopping inside Target when they arrived, police said. According to the police report, “She pulled into a parking space to the right of [Winslow’s] Escalade and noticed a male sitting in the driver seat with the window open. As she exited her vehicle, she commented to the male how cold it was. As she stood near the open drive side window … she [saw that he was exposed below the waist]. She stated that she believed he was masturbating.”

In other sports outlets it was also mentioned he had two bottles of vaseline.  He should have used lotion. I kid, I kid.

This is all I could think of as I heard it [the story].  Peep this brief comedic scene for a few kicks and giggles.

Oh yeah I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’ Neal poking fun at Winslow in a recent game between the Golden State Warriors and Indiana Pacers. Take a quick look here.

Another NFL receiver was in trouble for shenanigans as Cleveland Browns wide out Davone Bess was arrested in a Miami Airport. Below is courtesy of ESPN.com

MIAMI — Cleveland Browns wide receiver Davone Bess has been arrested in Florida on charges of assaulting a law enforcement officer at an airport.Broward Sheriff’s Office records show Bess, 28, was arrested early Friday after acting erratically and confronting an officer at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. Bess was charged with simple assault on an officer, resisting arrest without violence and disorderly conduct. He was released on $100 bail at 10:35 a.m. ET.

It’s uncertain if Bess has a lawyer.  The Browns said they are “aware of the situation and currently working to gather more information.”A sheriff’s report stated Bess seemed to be “under the influence of an unknown narcotic.” It also said the receiver was “looking through” the officer as they talked. Bess was “acting irrationally, dancing, singing with his pants repeatedly falling down,” the report said.

At one point, Bess grabbed a cup of coffee that was not his and squeezed it, spraying coffee on the officer. Bess then took a “fighting stance” and the officer hit him on the leg with a baton. The report says Bess removed his shirt and stayed in the stance. He dropped to the ground when more officers arrived.

What is wrong with these dudes?

Richard Sherman All-pro corner back for the Seattle Seahawks has been the most popular guy on social media and memes all over. He is known for being outspoken and cocky. Aside from his tirade post game interview after Sunday’s NFC title game over the 49ers, here’s another example of Richard Sherman interviewing with Skip Bayless on ESPN 1st Take.

In the end Sherman should realize two things:

1) A football player’s career is by far on average the shortest in professional sports. So all the loud brash talk you’re doing, count your blessings and be thankful for your God-given talent. It can all end with a snap of a finger.

2) Be also thankful you are on a good team and you’re able to show case your talents on national TV. Imagine if he played with the Jaguars, Bills, or Raiders. Ouch.

As far as the NBA, nothing I really care to talk about. We all pretty much know Miami is going to win this year barring a catastrophic injury to Lebron. I really don’t think Indy is there yet, and barring human element, the higher-ups will see to it that Indy doesn’t advance out of the East. There isn’t enough national appeal to them. The Celtics have realized my worst fears and are now tanking. You don’t go from 12-14 and leading your tepid division to 14-28 without tanking. You just don’t have that kind of bad luck.

Anyway, just my quick rants on the goings on in sports.

What are your thoughts on all of this? How do you feel about the [type of] attention Richard Sherman is receiving for his post game commentary? Your reaction? Tell us.

peace

“I’M BETTER THAN YOU AT LIFE”
    -Richard Sherman
This has to be one of the best quotes of 2014. Overall, I feel the the attention that Richard Sherman is receiving is great. What I am not feeling is all the negative attention that he is getting from the media regarding his passionate words to WR Michael Crabtree. Instead of the media praising Sherman about his lock down performance various media outlets are painting him as a brute, angry black man and that is never cool. Richard Sherman has a next to Ivy League education, and a Masters degree, but all that was put to the back burner when Sherman was telling reporters that, “Crabtree cannot beat the best”. This further proves that men of color are going to be continuous targets regardless of achievement. But did you peep? It did look like Sherman wanted call Crabtree a Nigga. I’m just glad that didn’t come out of his mouth!lol…

Yo I did peep it and you’re totally right, and the sad thing is, that the media wanted to take away from the game with all those generalizations of him…sad thing is, it’s like he has a reputation like pacman jones. Just like paul mooney said, unlike justin bieber he doesn’t have the “complexion for protection”
